Car Insurance - Making a Claim

If you have an accident…

1. AT THE SCENE

Never discuss liability. Stay calm and get as much information as possible.

· Get the contact details of independent witnesses before they lose interest and leave the scene.
· Take pictures of the vehicles and property before they are moved.
· Draw a quick sketch of the scene.
· Ask other drivers for their details and vehicle details.

2. AFTER THE ACCIDENT

· Tell your insurer about the accident as soon as possible, even if you don’t intend to make a claim.
· Get an accident report form from your insurer.

If your car is stolen…

If your car is stolen call the police immediately. Let your insurance company know what has happened and ask them for a claim form.

Don’t worry if you have to wait a while once you have informed the police and your insurer. A lot of stolen cars are recovered shortly after they have been taken from their owners.

Read your policy carefully to see if your insurer covers you against the loss of personal belongings that may have been in your car at the time it was stolen.
